Interesting report! Thanks for posting the photos of the Shays.

According to my quick research, the "active" Shays are stored serviceable, but currently not used to run any of the Alishan Forest Railway trains.

Also during the quick research, I found out that the derailment/accidents happened in March of 2003 (17 deaths) and April 2011 (6 deaths). The 2011 accident may have been caused by a downed tree.

Numbers 25, 26 and 31 restored and active. Many of the other Shays are on display.
The Alishan Forest Railway is one of the great railway journeys of the world.
Pity so few know about it. That should change now that it is being managed by the Taiwan Railways Administration.
