Queensland Rail Steam Special 30 January 2015

Queensland Rail 150 steam special MU05, led by BB18 1/4 1079 ran between Rockhampton and Mackay today, on its way to Cairns on the North Coast Line. The 3'6" gauge 4-6-2 was built by Walkers in Maryborough (Queensland), 547 of 1956.

Very nice. Too bad about the water tanks but probably necessary. Is that a high rail vehicle at the back? It can't be following that close? Or as the train stopped or it somehow coupled to the rest of the consist?

Definitely looks like it.Possibly carrying some fire fighting equipment should there be any spot fires.It is the middle of summer down here.

The locomotive appears to be a coal burner. So some sort of immediate fire protection is a very good idea!
The bush there in Oz burns about as fast as it does here in California. Very, very fast!!!

The climate where that photo was taken (between 21 and 23 degrees South) is wet tropical

January is wet season. Rainfall average for Mackay 1950-2013, January 12.484", Annual is 63"

The highest rainfall ever recorded in 1 day in Mackay, was 510.8 mm (20.1") on the 12 January 1951 at Mackay Airport, which is among the heaviest 24‑hour fall of any Australian city

Doubt that spot fires are a problem
