Ten Sydney monorail carriages destined for the scrap heap have been snapped up by a construction company to be potentially used in an amusement park overseas.

Metro Reuseables director Harry Tsoukalas last week listed 22 of the iconic monorail carriages on Gumtree with an asking price of $3000 each.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that 21 of the carriages have since been purchased, with 10 set to be shipped to Taiwan after Australian expat- Hung-Tien Chi paid $59,000 for them.

Mr Chi, who was born in Sydney and works for construction company Hito Shinki Corpoation, bought eight middle carriages.

He told the media outlet he would clean the carriages and restore them as best he could before deciding how they would be used.

"Using the carriages in an amusement park is one of the options I am considering," he said.

"But there are several other options. I am also talking to some local governments."

He said he planned to contact the engineers who worked on the original monorails and see if he can get their help to get the carriages operational again.

The remaining 11 carriages have been bought by a number of people in suburbs such as Wahroonga and Narrabeen, according to Fairfax Media.

Radio DJs from 2Day-FM Dan Debuf and Maz Compton reportedly bought one for $1500, while self-confessed "monorail nut" Helen O'Boyle bought four.

The monorail opened in 1988 before it was closed in June 2013 to make room on Sydney’s streets and for the redevelopment along the Darling Harbour waterfront precinct.
