Some Down Under Pictures

Hi all,

Back again after a busy period. All photos in South Australia unless noted.

1. 1M21 empty Ballast train passes through Virginia hauled by GM43 and GM42 on 4/14/15.

2 & 3. The same train passing through Korunye.

Next lot.

1. 1M21 crosses 4174 loaded grain from Snowtown hauled by 2212, 2207, 2214 on 4/14/15.

2. Pacific National service, 3MP5 climbs into Mt. Lofty hauled by NR95, NR73, G530 on 4/22/15. G530, a Clyde/EMD model JT26C-2SS made a welcome change to the normal pool of bankers for a couple of months.

3. The same train at Lynton.

Next lot.

1. PN service 3MP7 climbs upgrade at Yantaringa hauled by NR108, NR98, NR27 on 4/22/15.

2. GWA's Goodwin/Alco unit, 701 hauls a carriage transfer to Islington Works and Dry Creek through Dudley Park on 4/22/15.

3. Bowmans Intermodal's Balco service, 1417 crosses the Port River bridge at Pt. Adelaide behind MPI built CM3309 and Avteq built VL360 on 4/22/15.

1. Aurizon service, 2PM1 waits in the siding at Bishops Loop hauled by 6027, 6006 on 4/22/15.

2. Aurizon service, 3MP1 approaches Dry Creek hauled by 6026, LDP006 on 4/22/15.

3. Local PN shunt service, 1115 hauled by NR95, NR73, G530 shunts the Mobil fuel siding at Birkenhead on 4/22/15.

Next lot.

1. Clyde/EMD model JT26C-2SS locomotive G530. It was built for V/Line in July 1988 and later went to Freight Australia (Rail America owned) then Pacific National. You could say these are an SD40-2 with SD50 Super Series wheel slip control.

2 & 3. PN service, 4MA5 climbs the final grade into Mt. Lofty hauled by NR93, NR92, AN1, BL30 on 4/23/15. BL30 is another JT26C-2SS except it was built for Australian National in December 1983 before going to National Rail then Pacific National.

Next lot.

1. An elevated shot of BL30 with the roof profile being a give away to the SD40-2 internals.

2. In average conditions, PN service 5MP2 races along just north of Two Wells with NR35, MRL005, NR13 on 4/24/15. The Mineral Resources unit was returning back to Western Australia after maintenance in Melbourne.

3. PN service 6MP5, climbs upgrade at Yantaringa hauled by NR117, NR65, G530, DL45 on 4/25/15.

1. 6MP5 rolls through the Adelaide suburb of Clapham.

2.  GWA locomotives GWU002, FQ01, and GWU003 at Tailem Bend under a rainbow on 4/26/15.

3. The same three locomotives assisting to load a grain train at the same location on 4/26/15.

1. Pacific National locomotives, BL30 and DL41 stabled at Tailem Bend awaiting their next 'banker' duties back to Adelaide on 4/26/15.

2. PN service 5MP7 passes through the Adelaide suburb of Hawthorn behind NR118, NR8, NR83 on 5/1/15.

3. Passing through the old Hawhtorn station, PN service 3PM6 heads upgrade behind NR99, NR89 on 5/1/15.

1. GWA empty copper service, 1911 waits on the main line at Hesso for a track gang to clear hauled by CLP17, FQ02 on 5/5/15.

2 & 3. The return loaded service, 9112 sits at Wirraminna on sunrise with FQ02, CLP17 on 5/6/15.

Next lot.

1. A bit further down the track, 9112 waits in the siding at Mambray Creek after attaching GWA010 plus another crew car and an inline fuel wagon at Spencer Jct in Pt. Augusta. 5/6/15.

2. A charted heritage passenger train made it into South Australia in May. The train was jointly run by 3801 Limited, ARHS ACT division plus Insight Tours. Here we see 9L34 pass through Nantawarra hauled by CFCLA painted Bulldog's S311 and S300 on 5/11/15.

3. The charter waits in the platform at Port Augusta station while Pichi Richi Railway's narrow gauge, 1928 built Brill railcar no. 106 and trailer 305 wait opposite. The body of the Brill railcar was built at Islington Workshops on a chassis supplied by Brill in the USA. 5/11/15.

Next lot.

1. Another view of the two trains at Port Augusta. I got to work the pair of old Bulldog's back to Adelaide at speeds of up to 68mph.

2. S311 and S300 stand in the platform at Keswick after arriving from Port Augusta and running around the train ready for the following days departure. 5/11/15.

3. S311 and S300 haul 9L35 as they approach Nantawarra on 5/12/15.

1. 9L35 travels along between Huddleston and Gladstone on 5/12/15.

2. The same train about to enter a cutting between Gladstone and Caltowie.

3. Passing the grain silos at Yongala.

Three photos of 9L35 at Peterborough. Peterborough was once of two places in South Australia to have three different gauges at the same time. Narrow gauge or 3 ft 6, standard gauge of 4 ft 8.5, and broad 5ft 6.

2. 9L35 passes the old water tower at Paratoo.

3. The Indian Pacific, 3AS8 passes through Peterborough hauled by NR25, DL45 on 5/12/15.

1. Preserved English Electric 500 class shunt locomotive, 532 at Steamtown Peterborough on 5/12/15.

2. SAR narrow gauge steam locomotive, T199 at Steamtown Peterborough on 5/12/15.

3. PN service, 3YN2 climbs upgrade at Huddleston behind NR65, NR119 on 5/12/15.

1. PN service 3MP7 is about to enter Sleeps Hill tunnel hauled by NR85, NR75, NR28 on 5/13/15. The three different liveries are for Great Southern Railways passenger services - The Southern Spirit (not currently running), The Ghan and The Indian Pacific.

2. The lowest and highest horsepowered EMD's in GWA's fleet. FJ104 built in 1966 and powered by a 650hp 6-567C (Clyde model G6B) and GWA010 - a 2012 built GT46C-ACe powered by a 4300hp 16-710G3C-T2 engine. 5/24/15.

3. A non driving end of an A16C Bulldog. GM38 at Dry Creek on 5/24/15.

1. PN service, 2YN2 with NR12, NR93 passes GWA units 2207, GWA010 on a loaded grain train at Gladstone, 6/8/15.

2. Aurizon owned J26C, 2202 pulls a string of intermodal loading out onto the Port River bridge at Pt. Adelaide during shunting on 6/17/15.

3. Bowmans Intermodal service, 1417 comes down off the Port River bridge at Pt. Adelaide behind VL360, CM3309 on 6/17/15.

Last lot.

1. BL26 and AN4 shunt the Mobil fuel siding at Birkenhead on 6/17/15.

2. Another view of BL26. It was built for Australian National March 1983 as the class leader for an order of 10 units, BL26 to BL35.

3. I stuffed up the approaching shot due to poor timing in perfect sun but the trailing shot will do. PN service 6MP5 with NR26, NR84, NR40 heads towards the Adelaide Showgrounds station on 6/20/15.
