Somerset and Dorset line UK ,important anniversary

Sunday March 6 th 1966 the much loved  'S and D'  as many here with a knowledge of British Railway history will remember   was closed to all traffic

This Sunday, matches exactly to the day the 50th anniversary

a few months ago i made the trip to Bath to walk the formation down to Midford



here are some pictures i made

there are two tunnels on this section the second one being the longest single line unventilated bore in the UK

an old telegraph post has survived all these decades

a century and more of soot and ash still coats the wlls of the long tunnell..

if i recall it took me nearly 45 minutes to walk through this  was fascinating and the smell of the coal is still there

a major viaduct still in good condition the sure built these lines to last

Midford platform ,the line after  here went from single to double across a viaduct

Midford Viaduct   the location of the opening sequence of the 1952 comedy film 'The Titfield Thunderbolt'

Midford village,

the phone box is the same as seen in the 1952 film

the remains of the ex GWR Camerton branch road under bridge

 that  line passed under the S and D line viaduct further on

this minor railway closed in around 1950 and was removed by 1958

That's a very comprehensive set of photos. As one who never experienced the S&D when it was open, I was hoping to take the bike last year to enjoy the cycle trail. Must get organised and have some time down there this year. Chris uk.

yes i hope to do it again  its worth 3 or 4 hours out of your day to explore and the sumptuos food at the hope and anchor pub at midford is worth the trip alone
