Fepasa Chile -- more Los Andes line
Author: PERichardson

Fepasa finally painted in the new corporate colors the third and last road unit on the meter gauge line from Los Andes to Codelco's Andina copper mine.  This 20 mile line is the remaining segment of the Transandine that connected Chile with Mendoza, Argentina.  It closed in the early 1980s.   The line haul is copper concentrate and the tubs are lifted onto wide gauge flat cars at Los Andes.  From there they go to the smelter at Ventanas on the coast.  Here are a few shots from March 2016 of the latest repaint,  GE #1821.  The meet of 1820W and 1821E is at Vicaya, where all meets take place.  The remaining photos are along the line.  Best thing about this chase, apart being an hour from our home, is the trains run about 10 mph and all the shots are from your car, so to speak.  Only Vicaya requires parking, walking across a swinging suspension bridge above the river and hiking down the tracks about 50 yards.

A few more.  All the 1821 photos are westbound with loads.

Fantastic photos as usual from you. I hope to visit Chile soon. After the impeachment of current president of Brazil, the economy sings a better future.

Since three of you like the bridge shot,  here's a view of #1820 which came down earlier in the morning when the sun angle was better.  My favorite is the last shot,  showing the Andes,  a mining pickup truck on the highway and the general neighborhood.

I like em all. What is that monument along the highway?

I've  never looked, will check it out next time I'm up there.   Looks too elaborate for a memorial to a traffic death, such as the small one under the right end of the bridge in the previous photo.

Around 20,000 feet on average

The pointy mountain in the photo is the west face Alto de Los Leones. I was on an expedition led by Santiago climber Geno Casasa which made the first ascent of the west face in the late 1970s. I'm sorry to say I wasn't in the summit party.

A very nice survey, Alan.

My favorite was also the last frame.
