Vietnam -- Two for Auburn Ed
Author: gbmott

Part, at least, of the railroad in South Vietnam continued to operate throughout the war years.  At one point in the spring of 1967 my detachment was based near Phan Rang and I frequently drove past the railroad's shop there.  The daily train normally used a fairly modern GE diesel but there were several steam locomotives sitting around outside, as seen below (notice the armor plate that has been applied to the sides of the cab, partially blocking the window).  You can imagine my surprise one day when I looked and 231-537 was in steam!  No camera, of course (a camera was not part of my normal gear).
