A day at Drumond yard (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

On November 5th, I organized a trip on Vale mining passenger train P-001 from Belo Horizonte to Nova Era to watch trains with friends at Desembargador Drumond yard. An american railfan and CSX enginner joined us in that special occasion. Here are some pics of the trip.

1 - Friends in the first class car

2-   Photographing ore train

3 - The group at Drumond yard

2 - GE BB40-9W 1309 and 1300 were the leading power of that big train;

3 -  The leading units doing the curve near Itabira junction.

1 - GE BB40-9W 1161 was the DPU that separated the loaded coal section to the empty ore one;

2 - The train going ahead on track 5;

3 - Rodrigo watching the train from the pedestrian walkway.

2 -  one of the many brand new GDE class gondolas used by Vale;

3 - The train going away.

 GE BB40-9W 1115 working as DPU in 168 cars train. Note it was positioned between two types of ore, so we conclude they joined two trains coming from different mines to do this one.

Excellent photos!  It sure seems that the railroad has settled on one locomotive model for this route.  How many trains a day does this particular station see?

Yes, nowadays Vale narow gauge system is almost 100% GE BB40-9W, but it is possible to see DDM45 in some locations too.
In normal days we can see up to 50 trains in 24 hours period.

Makes me think of what a modern day East Broad Top Railroad might look like if it was still hauling coal in 2016.
