Railroad Museums in Bangkok, Thailand?
Author: PasadenaSub

On Tuesday 5/2 I'll be leaving Los Angeles, USA for a 2-week trip to Thailand with my wife. We'll be with a tour group with no scheduled train rides. However, we do have 4 days in Bangkok with 2 on our own to explore. I'm not anticipating much time for rail photos (other than maybe Skytrain or MRT subway), but our hotel is in Silom close to the main Bangkok train station. I see there is a Outdoor Railway museum there, though images on Google seem to show mainly coaches modified with some stylized graffiti. I also see there is a State Railways 2-8-2 #950 at the Siriraj Phimukhsthan Museum downtown. Any other static displays in Bangkok?

Also, how often do the restored State Railways steam duo of 824 and 850 run excursions? Recent pictures on another site show a trip in Bangkok just last month on March 26.

We'll also be visiting Chiang Mai and Phuket later on the trip. Any suggestions for rail viewing there?

Thanks for any info,

Rich

I can't help with your specific questions but can recommend a side trip to Kanchanaburi - the Death Railway, Bridge over the River Kwai. You can get there by train or go on an organised tour. It's not far from Bangkok so is easily done in a day. Be careful if you venture onto the bridge itself.

Professional UK photographer Paul Bigland, who specialises on transport, recently spent a couple of months in SE Asia, including Bangkok. There's a really interesting railway scene in and around the city. See here

I second the trip to the bridge. You can walk out on it or ride across. I took the local train to the end of the line and it was a good experience. Also note, there are plinthed steam locos on display at nearly every station including Bankok, in the country. With more time and money, although now probably too late for you to change plans, The Eastern and Oriental Express is with possibly the exception of Rovos Rail, the best in the world.
