Watarase geometry train derail cleanup
Author: Railpax71

(edit) I didn't mention that this is Gunma, Japan. Watarase is my favorite regional railroad. My second experience over 40 years ago when operated by JNR. My favorite experience was my wife writing a note with useful phrases. I want a ticket to Ashio, can you show me the platform, Can I take your picture? When I went to the window in Kiryu station I showed the note to the agent. He closed the window. Sold me a ticket, escorted me to the platform, and posed for a picture!

I went back to Mizunuma this morning and a lot of things had progressed.

#1 They used about half of the stack of ties to repair the track around the curve, then used two of the stranded DMUs to pull the trailing unit of the geometry train out of the way of the derailed car. Car jacks in the back of the utility truck.

#2 One of the busses substituting for the trains. Note "Watarase" in the destination sign.

#3 The diesel sent up from Omama pulled the lead unit down to Mizunuma station.

#4 Rubber tire crane from Oyama, Tochigi. 6:30 am but they had already positioned it from the nearest road crossing to the rails.

#5 End view of the lead unit usually hidden when coupled. At Mizunuma Onsen station. There is a passing siding here so the crane went through.

#6 Derailed middle car now accessible.
