EFVM 1202: the last one (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, today I was lucky to find Vale BB40-9W 1202, the last unit wearing the old CVRD / EFVM livery. It passed by my town leading a coke train.

Wow.. that paint scheme is almost gone now? Sad.

Are any of the DDM45s still running or stored?

Thank you.

Best Regards,
Harry

Hi, Vale still has 35 DDM45's, most of them stored. A few are running. Maybe all can be scrapped in 2018 since they will be sold to VLI that will trade them with EMD for new BB70ACe's.

The scheme really has been around for a while. The Krauss Maffei ML4000 C'C' diesel hydraulics wore it or a very close cousin.

Yes, it was the eagle scheme, same colours, albeit less white / cream, but slightly more stylised with the eagle on the nose and speed rather than block lettering. Here's a DDM45 in eagle livery.

The eagle livery was done by EMD La Granje. Unfortunately, all DDM45's wearing that livery were scrapped. Now, only 35 units survives as Vale green livery.

That BB40-9W's paint sure looks like a knockoff of the BN "Grinstein Green" executive scheme, right down to the twin red pinstripes separating the cream and maroon.

Sad to hear of the impending demise of the remaining DDM45 fleet. I remember in my pre-teen youth seeing the news photo in TRAINS magazine when they were built. Don't know what the status of rail preservation is there, but I hope at least one of them gets saved.

Yes, one or two years ago I wrote a letter to VLI chairman about the importance to sdave one DDM45 for posteriority and one unit was saved and sent to Uberaba shops to be painted and preserved at that shops. Unfortunately, it is empty isnde, with no prime mver and eletric traction motors. But the body shell is saved.

That is a coke train? The cars seem very fully loaded for such a powdery material. How do they keep the wind from blowing dusty coke all over the place?

Hi, yes it is a coke train. They do not add nothing to prevent the wind blowing the powdery material. This train was running at about 50 km/h and produced a big cloud of fust.
There is a video of it at my channel "MGR videos" at Youtube. Look for it there.
