Ratlesnakes are a problem here. With the dry season and the fires in the woods, they come to the gardens. Walk on the tracks here is really dangerous.

when i was in m.o.w., i saw a picture of a sidewinder that was also stuck in a bolthole out here on the seligman sub.

But they do bar-b-que well though. Great with Kansas Ciy BBQ sauce.

Snakes like to lay alongside the rails as they warm up faster than the ground and snakes love the warmth. Also don't forget a snake can strike at many times his length.

Rattlesnake Facts

– Over 25 rattlesnake roundup events are held in the United States annually.

– The female rattlesnake gives birth to live young. A normal litter is 8 to 15. The gestation period is between four and seven months.

– The lifespan of a rattlesnake is about 20 years.

– The most dangerous rattlesnake is the Cascaval of South America. A whopping 75% of people bitten are reported to die of asphyxiation!

– The rattlesnake’s rattle can be heard from a distance of up to 60 ft.

– Rattlesnakes are deaf. They can’t even hear another snake’s rattle! They sense vibrations instead. Works for them.


Rattlesnake Cocktail
1 1/2 oz whiskey
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 oz. Southern Comfort
1 egg white
1 tsp. sugar
Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into a cocktail glass, and serve with a cherry.

Rattlesnake Stew
1 large onion, chopped
2 large garlic cloves, minced
1 bag baby carrots
3 celery stalks, chopped
4 white potatoes, chopped
handful fresh parsley, finely chopped
1 15 oz. can whole tomatoes, punctured
2 bay leaves
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
3 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. thyme
1 can beef broth
2 tbsp. corn starch or flour
1 tsp. ketchup
1 tsp. steak sauce
2 lb. rattlesnake meat
juice from 1/2 lemon

Simmer rattlesnake in water and lemon juice for 1 hour, remove and separate meat from bones.
Combine de-boned meat with the rest of the ingredients in a crockpot and slow-cook for 6-8 hours, or bring to boil in large cooking pot and simmer for 2 hours.

Southern Fried Rattlesnake:
1 egg
salt to taste
1 tsp. minced garlic
1 tsp. seasoning salt mix
3/4 cup milk
1 tsp. pepper
flour
1 rattlesnake
Cut snake meat into 4 inch lengths. Beat egg and milk. Mix spices with flour in a separate bowl.
Preheat deep fat fryer with cooking oil. Dip snake into egg mixture and then in flour mixture and place it in hot oil.
Cook until golden brown and crispy like fried fish. Serve with french fries.

also, the last 2 rattlesnakes i have encountered (western diamondback and mojave green) did NOT rattle although they were very aware of my presence.....

Oh my God! this is the most common here! I have found some Cascavels in my garden in the last years. There many in the woods here and they come to the streets when the fire season starts. My neighborn found a big one in his garage last week.

I attended a lecture by a renowned doctor and snake bite expert at Loma Linda Med Center in Southern California. He discussed how most rattlesnake bites weren't fatal and how to deal with one if bit. Then he brought the house down when he said that in his 40+ years of experience treating them, about 90% of rattlesnake bites involved young men and alcohol. lol

I was at a weekend Boy Scout/Cub Scout event. They gathered the boys in a area, told everyone that if you see a snake, leave it alone and resort it to an adult. So who got bit? The idiot adult who thought he could pick it up by its tail, go bit in the hand and did not report it until his had had swollen up twice the size. They barely got him to the hospital.....

An uncle of mine was a section hand on the NP around Livingston, MT. I recall his sending us several rattles from snakes he killed along the ROW. I was pretty impressed back then. Having encountered a few live ones, I am even more impressed!
