'Daa: class EMD G12's. These were "Da" class 1400 HP units converted for hump shunting at TeRapa in the North Island.
The Hump operation closed many years ago

Were these ever used on commuter trains?I seem to remember something similar doing commuter duties while I was there in the mid 70's.

Yes the units did run commuter services, or I should say the "Da" class
from 1430 onwards to 1545 with Dafasco bogies. The older "Da"s were restricted to 30mph with prefabricated bogies'
