GE C21MP to Drummond Coal on the road (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, yesterday I found two GE C21MP on the BR040 road. The units were produced by GE of Brazil to Drummond Coal in Colombia. The trucks are going to Rio de Janeiro port.

Unfortunately the units were covered by canvas.

I don't have a current Drummond 3' gauge list

Extrapolating from Greg Sommers list in Latin Tracks #24 (Feb 2007)

The first 6 C21EMP were plated 12/05, 2101-2106
2107 to 2111 (possibly 2012) were delivered prior to May 2015
Pedro photographed 2113 (and 2114?) in transit in Brazil September 22 2015
I think that the pair above will be 2115 and 2116

Drummond have an all GE fleet
Asset #7256 SL80 9/94
LA001 - LA027 U18C built between 3/95 and 10/02, LA017-021 were built for FNC (State Railways) in 1964 and 86, acquired on termination of lease in 2002
2001-2007 ex FNC U20C built 1964 acquired on termination of lease in 2003

Hi, a friend of mine said me today that the locomotives I photographed on BR040 road on August 24 are Drummond Coal 2144 and 2145.

There are two C23 from Bolivia that are damaged and waiting to be restored by GE that are stored in a company near GE plant here in Brazil.

The insurers deemed them to be beyond economic repair, and sold the hulks

I have searched the internet attempting to find information on any Drummond mines in Bolivia, and haven't found even one thing!  I found that they have big time coal mining and railroad operations in Colombia, but found none in Bolivia.  Where are the Drummond mines in Bolivia located?

There are no Drummond mines in Bolivia

The C21-EMP is a 3' gauge model built exclusively for Colombia,

Also used by the other Colombian coal mining companies (Glencore et al), possibly over 40 built to date

It is expected that the 5 x 96 tonne metre gauge C23-EMP on order for FCAB in Chile for 2019 delivery, will be a variant of the Colombian C21-EMP

Ferroviaria Oriental in Bolivia received 7 C23-EMP (with an additional 7 on order) and Transnamib 6, however these use a longer frame and are heavier  think of these as  derated versions of the 25 C25-EMP supplied to Nigeria.

Sheltam in South Africa took 20 C30-EMP, and Richards Bay Minerals have a similar pair, low geared for switching, but derated to 2500hp. GE do Brazil built 9 broad gauge C30-EMP for Vale's Argentinean potash project, when this was cancelled, GE placed the locos on Cape gauge bogies, and they are now used by Vale on coal haulage in Mozambique

Oh sorry, it was a mistake of mine. At the same time these two C21 were leaving GE plant, a couple of C23 from Bolivia are arriving to the plant. The units were wrecked in Bolivia and returned to GE. So, I confused the two owners while writing the title, but the text explains correct that they are to Colombia.
