FCAB Freight Trucked GA8 Switcher at Night
Author: erielackawanna

Following a disappointing attempt to find and shoot GA8 switchers in La Negra, a friend and I hoped to slake our GA8 needs by getting some night shots of the switcher running through downtown Antofagasta to the port there. It got pretty dark though, so dark that I had to push the ISO on my 80D beyond the actual capabilities of a Canon sensor. Things did work out as we were waiting at the gate to the old FCAB station, all of a sudden the gate rolled open and noises of all kinds began.

Here are one overly grainy shot of the GA8 and a quickie phone video of it leaving the station area.

Are these the chain drive switchers I saw as a kid in “The GM Scrap Book” and Diesel Spotters guide ! still running, WOW! Simplicity is the key to a long running life!

A traction motor and cardan shaft driving each wheel truck.

Wholly crap that crossing signal needs to go. May be effective but will deafen most folks. Great video.

I assume that annoying siren (started after the gate had fully opened) is accomplishing its intent of keeping people far away. Was worse in person than you're hearing on the video.
