wonder if that influenced the broader gauge choice, of having cables , when did it stop operating?

For sure, the british companies influencied the broad gauge in Brazil, since tbe first companies were started by them. 
The funicular operated normally until 1976, and for tourism until 1994. But due to the bad condition of the old structure of Grota Funda viaduct it was closed that year.
