Removing the dash 9's from the ore train ( Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi  another video "lost" in my cell phone. A couple of VLI BB40-9WM's are removed from Vale ore train class 47 here in town. They will be used to form the daily limestone train class 04.
This video is from September 20, 2019.

Interesting to see those 200Ton Monster GE locomotives running on narrow gauge track.  No wonder they had to have a B-B+ B-B truck conversion before the track could handle the weight.

It's not so much the track handling the weight. Tie spacing and rail weight determine that regardless of gauge
but rather the fact that the much narrowed traction motors have nowhere the capability of the standard gauge
version. You need more motors to get the power to the rail.

the old 2000 hp. units with six motor trucks averaged 333hp per axle while the new units with 4000-4500hp and eight axles have 500-562hp per axle. That's a whole lot more load on the rail  but then you have more locomotive weight enforcing that tractive effort..  You have to wonder what effect that friction has on the interface between the rail and the driving wheels, especially on narrow gauge rail.
