International Railroad Discussion > The fourth derail in Rumo system in a month (Brazil)

 Hi, today we had another derailment in Rumo broad gauge system. A double stack train derailled in Chapadão do Sul, MS after enter in section of tracks where the elastic fasteners were removed by vandalism. It is the fourth derail in four weeks. The Federal Police is investigating all the cases.

How many miles or Kilometers apart are the wrecks.  In the same basic area ?

Hi, the derails 2, 3 and 4 happened in Mato Grosso do Sul state. Number 2 and 3 were just 20 km apart. Number 1 was a bit further and happened in Paraná state in the narrow gauge system.

Pedro, seems like a lot in a single area.  Do the tracks get undermined with the rains?

Hi, the first investigations discovered that a lot of elastic fasteners were removed and the rails were loosen.

Just curious. Who are the suspected vandals, and what's their motive? Sorry if this has been mentioned before. 

Hi, the police didn't reveal any information for while to not disturb the investigations.

When I worked in South Africa, there was a train derailed because the local folks stole the rails.
