FCAB Chile New EMD power
Author: masterphots

In mid-2018 Ferrocarril Antofagasta y Bolivia (FCAB) took delivery of seven EMD (Indiana) GT42ACs.  These were the first new-build units for FCAB since G22C No. 1410 was bought in 1969.  In November 2019 an additional seven GT42ACs arrived and there is a rumored order for five more.  These will replace most all of the x-CNR NF210 Newfoundland units, as well as many GR12s.  Here are some photos of the new units in August 2018.

1.  No. 3202 at Despesperado.  This was a helper drifiting down and we flagged him down for a roster shot in perfect light.

2.  No. 3204 westbound with sulphuric acid loads at Los Moros.  The helpers will cut off at the next siding, about 4 miles distant

3.  The old and new meet at Gaviota.  3205 westbound meets GR12 1411 eastbound

4.   3207 eastbound with acid empties at Gaviota

5.   Not a new EMD but a matched set of Clyde-EMD G26Cs in the new livery on a westbound lead concentrate train at Cumbre.  These units were former Queensland Rys.  The lead unit is one of four that has been turbocharged,  hence the raised hood and higher exhaust stack.

Great photos, Thanks for sharing.
Great to see the EMD revival with the GT38, GT42 and GT46 series.
Please revise your first photo caption to 3202.

Cool stuff, Alan.

It's neat that you can make a quick trip to Mars without a space ship whenever you like.  LOL

And all these shots were taken within a 45 min drive from the beachfront Holiday Inn in Antofagasta where we always stay.  Nothing like the Atacama Desert.  No worries about bushes, etc in the way and it's sunny 90% of the time.

Congrats on IMOD from 5,000 miles away Alan. The Atacama Desert and Searles Valley
( around Trona, Calif.) seem remarkably similar just on a different scale.

Except for the occasional issue with your car whilst driving off-road in the Atacama. Witness this from a chase in 2013 where in the words of masterphots:
We were not stuck,  "we had to remove the wheel so I could rip off the hanging piece I'd earlier caused by hitting something.   Never rent a chase car with no ground clearance."

That place is more desolate than any desert I've ever seen.  Not a single bush, plant or weed.  Wow.

That's yours truly on the right.  The offending bit off the bottom of the car is on the ground to the left.  I stuck it in the planter by the hotel entrance when we got back.  The location is Sergio Galvan siding below the summit at Cumbre.

Congratulations on Image of the Day  - Who would have thought that 3'6" would produce such brutes, let alone EMD (heirs or successors) would have accomplished it. Well Done. Thanks!
