The line near the Chile/Bolivia border is over 13,000 feet in altitude and only the higher-powered Clyde-EMD units or the homebuilt GT22CU-3 units are used on these trains. Due to a derailment up there, a number of train consists gathered at Calama and this is one coming down to the port at Mejillones. Hence the lower horsepower units.
