International Railroad Discussion > Derailment in Rumo narrow guage system (Brazil)Date: 01/30/21 16:20 Derailment in Rumo narrow guage system (Brazil) Author: pedrop Hi, a broken rail caused a derailment of Rumo narrow guage locomotives today between the locations of Monte Castelo (LME) and Papanduva (LPV) in Santa Catarina state, in the South. Nobody was hurt.

A broken rail sure can make a mess of things as your interesting pictures show us.

People use to say that this was a "poor convertion" project, since ALL had no money to use BB+BB trucks. Actually, they converted just one GE to BB33M, but the cost was high and they preffered to lose tractice effort and use smaller traction motors in the original C-C trucks than to invest the convertion to BB+BB. They also preffered to use more units to compensate the lack of tractive effort per unit.

The other end of the consist didn't look as though someone would have walked away without serious injury.
