Great story.Must have been a lonely existance for track workers and their families back then.Kids used to (still do on remote cattle stations)get their schooling using radios.Think the ABC ran School of the Air.

My understanding (as one who as relatives in WA) is that School of the Air is still very much in use, although in my cases is done via internet connections now.
