New international bridge links Russian, Chinese railways
Author: illini73

A new bridge opened August 17, 2021 linking the Chinese and Russian railway systems near the northeastern China city of Tongjiang.  Article on the 2.2km structure here:

Tongjiang - Nizhneleninskoye Railway Bridge opens

The bridge, part of China's "Belt and Road" initiative, will reduce the rail distance between Tongjiang and Moscow by 809km, saving about 10 hours of transit time.

Could be standard and Russian gauge. Maybe reason for offset rails.

Very good question, since Russia's standard gauge is 5' (1520mm) while China's is like ours, 4' 8" (1435 mm).

Apparently, based on a reading of a (poorly) translated Chinese article on the bridge, it can handle wheelsets of either the Russian or Chinese "standard" gauges.  Hence the four rails on the bridge deck as shown in the linked CNN article.  It's not clear where the wagon bogies are swapped out, if that's what they're doing.  Bridge speed limit is 100kph.

Very interesting.

It's in the far northeast of China.  Not likely to be a Beijing-Moscow mainline.  But they talk about it that way...  There is already a China-Russia rail connection with the historic Beijing-Moscow line through Manchuria farther west.

I wonder what route they are referring to with the "800 km shorter" statement.
