China has operated its first test runs on its standard gauge China - Laos Railway south from China to Vientiane, the capital of Laos.  Regular service is scheduled to start December 2.  Vientiane is a northern terminal for the meter-gauge Southeast Asia network which forms a continuous line to Bankok in Thailand, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and the city-state of Singapore.

This is the first time in history there is a continuous rail route from Europe to Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, or Singapore.

Hasn't the railway been banished from Singapore, I thought I read that you now have to cross to Johore in Malaysia to catch a train?
