Terrorist Attack on Fepasa Chile train
Author: masterphots

Yesterday around 4:30 am a Fepasa cellulose train was derrailed and set on fire on the mainline between Temuco and Victoria in southern Chile. Two SDL39s separated by an MU car were on the point.  The second unit, No. 2342, had fire damage and is in for repairs. There were no serious injuries.  A decades long battle between the indigenous population and the timber/farming industries continues to escalate.  With a constitutional convention in progress as well as presidential elections in the next few weeks, the violence continues.  The military is now on site in the area but don't seem to being doing much.  The goal of the indigenous people is to reclaim their ancestral lands that were taken over the past 100 years or so.  This will never happen and all sides talk about negotiation but nothing significant ever happens to advance solutions.  This is also spilling over into Argentine Patagonia where some of the same tribes reside (and the Esquel narrow gauge operates).
