The derailment of lime train C360 (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Today we had another derailment in the tracks linking Minas Gerais and Bahia states, called Minas Bahia subdivision (MB) on VLI system. Lime train C360 originated here in EVP yard (Km 627) a week ago derailed at Km 1,225 near EJN siding.  The heavy rains and the poor tracks contributed to the accident. Four covered hoppers were sent to the ground and produced big mess on the tracks.
Pictures and videos by friends in that area.

The first photo was interesting, you don't see many railfan photos taken from the back of a horse! Thanks for the photos very interesting. Do the railroads in Brazil do all of the clearing of wrecks or do they use mostly specialized  contractors as we now do most often in the US?

It seems like a large number of derailments thought to be caused by the large amount of rain.  For some reason it seems like there have been past rains like these with derailments too.   Is that correct?

Yes, the derailment happened inside a farm and somebody preferred a horse to reach the site.
Here in Brazil the railroads have their own gang to clean the wrecks, but sometimes they need to contract more cranes or dozers to help them.

Yes, that narrow gauge line is old and always has big issues in the rain season. I imagine it will be abandonned soon. VLI railroad hasn't doing the maintenance necessary to prevent derails like this. Their attention is focused in the more profitable lines, specially the rights to built new broad gauge railroads to serve huge grain producers.
