Fepasa Chile chase this morning
Author: masterphots

Before our son Sebastian returns to university next week,  I talked him into joining me this morning for a local train chase. When I say local,  where we shot is about 75 miles from home in Santiago.   As scheduled,  we caught the westbound copper concentrate empties returning from the smelter at Ventanas to the loadout near Montenegro.  This operation services the Anglo-American Las Bronces mine high in the Andes.  Today the train was pulled by SD40-2 #3302,  ex-BNSF 6385, originally C&S 6385.  It's a long way from its former Denver base.  Here are a few of his digital photos along the short segment of the 120- mile line that is perfectly lit by the midwinter morning sun.  As always dad was shooting slides.

1.  A couple of miles east of Colmo
2   Nearing Manzanar
3.  Downtown Carolomo

Top photo, near rail: What is making all those vertical shadows? Too close for excess weld material.

Correction....I had the wrong photo with my earlier comment.  Shadows from high-tension wires and towers cropped out of the photo posted.   Nothing from the rail.

Thought the same thing, and only on the one rail and not the other...

Very nice trains. Here in my area we also have trains of concentrate that use gondolas covered with canvas too.

This is the only one;  all others now use sealed containers to keep dust and other particulates from blowing off the trains.
