Less two BB36-7 on the fleet (Brazil).
Author: pedrop

On a rainy day in January 2023, a couple of VLI BB36-7 leading an empty limestone and clinker train found a mudslide on the tracks at Km 136 near Quatis station and derailed taking a few cars with them to a stream at side. The engineer had  minus injuries. VLI decided not to remove the locomotives and cars to no disturb the trains to CSN steel plant. They decided to scrapp the units when the train movement in that area allow a day or two to the scrapping job.
Unit 720 is former Conrail B36-7 5054 and unit 739 is former Conrail 5041.

So the scrapping process was to salvage the trucks and wheels and leave the rest, or is the picture pre-scrapping"

The parts seen in the wreck site were removed by the scavators when cleaning the tracks to reopen the traffic.

I wondered to if and when the metal scrapping took place?  One large loss in motive power.

The locomotives don't look to be too damaged.   Surprised they don't fix them.

Hello Pedro,

I bet there is a great deal of iron ore in that mud.

Yes, they are not too bad, but VLI adopted the policy of using the insurance to pay for a new locomotive. Last January, a BB40-9MW derailed on Serra do Tigre and was also abandonned to be scrapped later because the insurance paid for a new locomotive. In fact, VLI ordered ten new ES43BBi to Wabtech.

The BB40-9MW that derailed in January will be scrapped from July to October. They will remove some parts and then cut the frame and other heavy parts. These two BB36-7 also will be in the mud for some months waiting a better opportunity to be scrapped.

That area is a bit far from the big iron ore reserves, but iron ore can be found almost everywhere here.

Pedro,
Great coverage. Picture 2, 4 or 5 gets my vote for IOTD.
