Vitznau Rigi Bahn

The first Swiss rack railway to be built was that from Vitznau, on the shores of Lake Luzern to the top of Rigi, the Queen of Mountains. Today it operates these strange looking Stadler EMUs. Some older stock is present and the car barn is adjacent to the ferry slip where the paddle steamers tie up

Very interesting. I was born in a mountain city near Rio de Janeiro that had a rack railway from 1896 to 1956. They use only Swiss made steam engines from SLM builder.

Is a rack railway and a cog railway the same thing?

Yes...whether you reference the cog or the rack doesn't matter....it's the same beast.

Those Swiss lake steamers are a grand show.
The two I rode on had engine room viewing windows and the crew and owners were very proud of their equipment: everything neat, clean and if brass it was polished.
