Railfaning at Sabará tunnel - part 1 (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

I am starting a series in five parts to show the trains I watched yesterday at Sabará tunnel. I visited that nice spot in the city of Sabará, about 25 km (15.5 miles) from home with friend Gabriel Baldi. The location is famous because the Sabará tunnel, the longgest narrow gauge tunnel in Brazil, with 2,909.88 meters long, what means 9,546.88 feet long.
It is located at Km 73 of Vale EFVM Belo Horizonte branch, near Sabará junction, where Vale tracks connects with the dual gauge system served by VLI and MRS. It is a hot spot here. At this time of the year, it is good to visit it in the afternoon because the sun light of our dry Winter lights up the tunnel in the background.
Sabará tunnel is a streight section of tracks that allow us the see the light far away in the opposite entrance. Vale also added eletric LED lighting inside the tunnel to allow a better view of the tracks inside it, since the MoW and Inspection gangs pass by it very often.
All pics and videos from my cell phone since my cameras are gone🙄.

1) The mountains in the backgroud have rich gold veins, that is explored by the gold mining companies. They found good amount of gold while opening the tunnels in this location;

2) An empty ore with 168 ore cars and a DPU in the middle approaches a privated crossing level just after exit the tunnel in a 1,98% grade down hill;

3) Vale 1141 leads the empty ore.

Thanks Larry, yes our Winter use to be hotter than the Summer because it is very dry. Last rain came in May. Next one can come mid September.

7) A Google view of the area of the tunnel. The video was recorded from the red dot location. The tunnel is at the yellow dot.
