There is another series shown on TV down here from time to time (might be BBC also )....Chris Tarrant's Extreme rail JourneysHe did that trip in a recent show. They had to get off and help shovel sand.

Take the possibility of being kidnapped out of the equation, and I'd give it a try. 

Anybody know the ancestry of the dead locomotives in the photos?  Looks like modified SD40s in service now.
