New Tren Maya line extension in the Yucatan
Author: LTCerny

A 28-mile extension to Playa del Carmen from the prior end of Tren Maya service in Cancun started passenger service on February 29.  This further extends the contiguous North American railway network.

You have to wonder if these Tren Maya lines will even cover 10% of their operating costs, to say nothing of recovering the capital costs.

I have had some nice times at Playa del Carmen, and this will be fun to see and ride if I ever get back.
One thing about this line: it is vulnerable to tropical storms.
When I last visited Cancun, in about 2008, there were many reminders of a tropical storm that had come ashore a few years before.
Large deposits of sand, unrepaired buildings, uprooted trees, etc.
None of this would be a surprise to the locals, I just hope the designers took this into consideration.
