A Dash 9 overhauled by Wabtech of Brazil
Author: pedrop

Wabtech of Brazil is overhauling the old BB40-9's of Vale mining. Unit 1105 is one of them and I saw it here in town yesterday. I noted that Wabtech also removed the old GE builder's plate and add its own plate.

1 - 3) The new vivid colors are great.

Whatever happened to paint schemes that respected the lines of the locomotive?

Im curious if it kept the Dash 9 computer, or got upgraded to the Evolution Series computer system.

Wabtec and Vale kept them original in this overhaul program. Vale/ EFVM (narrow gauge) refused the Evolution ES43BBi's offered by GE/ Wabtec years ago. Only Rumo and VLI accepted them. Interesting that in the broad gauge system EFC,  Vale accepted to use the Evolutions ES58ACi's.

Good evening Pedro,
I hope you are tolerating the early fall. Are these locomotives used in heavy grade service?
About the BB trucks, Are all the axles powered and what voltage/ac/dc are they?
I thought I was looking at the copy cat of the UP DD40X for a minute there.

Thank you.

Hi Leon
The Fall is nice in my area, with good weather and beautiful days. In the South is raining too much and many cities are flooded there.
These BB40-9s are used by Vale mining EFVM railroad. VLI also use the same wheel arrangment with its GE BB40-9WMs, BB36-7s and GM BB40-2s. They use eight traction motors to get the same traction effort of normal units of the same model, since these are narrow gauge (1,000mm) units and the normal traction motor of standard gauge units do not fit in narrow trucks.

13 - 14) VLI BB36-7 8501 still using fallen glag FCA colors;

15) Progress Rail BB40T-2 8109 is also using former FCA colors .⁸
