Railfaning in Moeda (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Today 6/23, I visited the nice town of Moeda, about 72 Km from my town. I went there with wife to spend the day in the town and also watch some trains nearby. The town is served by broad gauge tracks (5ft 3in) of old Paraopeba Line of the ancient Central of Brazil railroad (EFCB), now operated by MRS.

1 - 3) Moeda station was opened in 1919.

4 - 5) The drinking fountain common found in the old railroad stations of ancient EFCB;

6) The old water supply tower from the steam days.

7) The underpass under the railway line in the Moeda station;

8) Ore train passing by the station, but I was looking for a place to have a good meal;

9) A nice restaurant with a view to the tracks. The price is not too bad.

10) The restaurant is nice and the food good;

11) A place to take a picture;

12) This restaurant is also good and has better prices. It is in front of the station. The name means " Water from the Tunnel", refering to the tunnel located near the station.

16 - 18) A few Km from Moeda, is is located the old Marinhos station, now is just a siding for train crossings. The landscape is beautiful there.

19) Moeda and Marinhos have orange and tangerine plantations. I asked a farmer if he could sell me some tangerines and he gave me two big boxes for free. He said these are a bit small to be sold in the market and they use to smash them to use as fertilizer in the plantations. So, people can get them for free.

That's all for today.

The Moeda station looks like it could be expecting a passenger train at any minute.  When did the last one run ?

The last passenger train on those tracks was the daily Vera Cruz, that linked Belo Horizonte to Rio de Janeiro. Its last run was on May 20, 1990.

20 - 21) The Vera Cruz with the great Budd cars.

Your drone photos offer a whole new perspective for your descriptions of Brazilian rail operations, Pedro.  Much appreciated!

Beautiful p;ictures -- thank you.

For a station not used for 34 years, it's in beautiful condition. What's it used for these days?

Nowadays there is nothing inside it. In the past, it houses a small museum. I hope it can have better days in the near future.

For sure you could have fun there. Sometimes it is cold in that valley, like we can see by this picture taken in 2003.
