Cape Town's MetroRail

Between the rain drops today I caught this southbound MetroRail commuter train on the Southern Line at St. James Beach, Cape Town, South Africa as it runs along False Bay.

Quite the spectacular run!

I hjope they have a better fate than what they replaced. Extreme vandalism was common. Passengers were known to riot and burn the train if it was late. If I remember correctly, they burned a train, the Pretoria station, and the interlocking tower over a signal failure delay. On the other hand, maybe Amtrak passengers should think about that.

I've always been curious about south african trains. There's very little video of the newer heavy electric freights unfortunately. Glad to get a glimple of the new passenger trains at least - thanks for posting!

Lovely photos and good to see investment in the railways out there.

That location looks like it could be a bit spooky on a stormy day!  Interesting-looking equipment.

These images represent what an early version of the California High Speed Rail would have looked like if they had electrified the former Santa Fe line from Orange County to San Diego.
That idea was unacceptable to the residents of San Clemente, Del Mar, and all the others along the line, many of whom have spent into the millions for their view lots along the coast.
