International Railroad Discussion > Heavy Electrics in South AfricaDate: 07/14/24 10:28 Heavy Electrics in South Africa Author: RailRyder A trio of Transnet Class 18E series 2 electrics head into the Golden Hour near Johannesburg, South Africa, waiting on the famous Blue Train to pass by. These were built between 1969 & 1984 by Union Carriage & Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with GE electrical components as class 6E1 and rebuilt in recent times. While there is still quite a bit of freight action, most of the signal systems have been destroyed by copper wire theft, so it makes slow going even on the main lines.

I think the electrical components came from EE/AEI before they were folded into GEC. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/14/24 13:42 by 86235. |
