Heavy Electrics in South Africa
Author: RailRyder

A trio of Transnet Class 18E series 2 electrics head into the Golden Hour near Johannesburg, South Africa, waiting on the famous Blue Train to pass by.  These were built between 1969 & 1984 by Union Carriage & Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with GE electrical components as class 6E1 and rebuilt in recent times. While there is still quite a bit of freight action, most of the signal systems have been destroyed by copper wire theft, so it makes slow going even on the main lines.

Nice picture, good to see the old stagers still at work. I think the electrical components came from EE/AEI before they were folded into GEC.
