GE 90ton Electrics in Chile
Author: filldiesel76

Hello everyone,
I am looking for the technical data of those GE electrics sent to Chile!
Do you know what power they had?
When were they built?

Thank you

Cheers

There were four of these,  all assigned to the Pedro de Valdivia plant.  Numbered 4-7,  renumbered in 1990 to 8-11.  Nos 3-4 were built in May 1958,  serials 32937-8;  Nos. 5-6 were built in Sept 1960, serials 33887-8.  The latest photos I have of them in operation were in 1995.  By 2002 all were in a pile awaiting scrapping at the Maria Elena plant.
The entire railroad, which extended from Pedro de Valdivia through Coya Sur and Maria Elena plants to the coast at Tocopilla,  was shut down in November 2015.   By then, the electric portion was reduced to the line from Barriles down the mountain to the port at Tocopilla.
This line was famous for its 1927 GE box cab operation which resembled Montana's Butte Anaconda & Pacific.  Today the plants are shut down and little remains of the railway.

I can't find horsepower listed for these units in any of the data I have.

These were custom built by GE,  using standard diesel U12C trucks, traction motors and frame,  with cab/hoods modified to fit the pantograph.
