The EMD SD70BBJ for Australia is almost ready (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

The first battery powered SD70BBJ to Australia was seen swiching at EMD plant in Sete Lagoas, Brazil last week. The unit is wearing the gray prime painting. I received a "one time" view picture of it in my whatsapp. I will try to get a picture of it next weekend, if I am luck to find it out of the shed.
The rumors says it will delived in the first quater of 2025.

Not sure for while, but the old news on Trains magazine web page says FMG ordered two heavy Joules here.

Hope to see them switching in the EMD yard before to be sent to Australia. For sure they will be sent by trucks and under canvas to the port in Rio de Janeiro.

Thanks Pedro! Can't wait to see pics of them.

These have a full-width carbody, BB trucks and a pantograph from what I've read. Will be a very interesting design to see in action.

As I understand it, pretty much every major North American Class 1 railroad is keeping a very close eye on these. They have enough battery capacity to cover a much larger distance than the Wabtec FLX Drive and can put down a ton of tractive effort across eight axles. I'm hoping they're a successful design.

Is the Union Pacific one being built there or at Fort Wayne ?

EMD had an "Open Gates" party yesterday (10/26) for employee's relatives. Unfortunately, I do not know no one there that could invite me to join the party. A friend of mine was there and he said me he saw the two Australian SD70BBJ. One is the assembly line and the other under tests. They said the unit weights 290 metric tons. For sure, it is a very heavy unit, that's why they have BB+BB trucks.

Not sure how far they'll drain the batteries but that 5.7MW would power the locomotive at a 4000 hp level for
about 2 hours  (theoretical) so should be interesting to see what the actual numbers will be.

SD70J-BB is rated for 5.7MW

I corrected my numbers, that 50 hours just didn't sound right!
