International Railroad Discussion > Tren Maya Sleeper serviceDate: 11/17/24 15:33 Tren Maya Sleeper service Author: Flyer92122 Is Tren Maya fully operational now including the sleepers? Where will they be running? Is the route long enough currently to need the full sleepers and diners the website advertises?
Date: 11/18/24 02:45 Re: Tren Maya Sleeper service Author: jeffgeldner According to the website, the line to Palenque has not yet been completed and the Maya Train Restaurant and the Maya Train Long Distance train service types are not yet available. I only have experience riding El Meridano pre-privatization which featured sleeping and dining car service. The train's Merida to Palenque segment was overnight. However, it operated at lower speeds albeit it did serve the downtown areas. Most of the Tren Maya stations are some distance away from the towns along the rote so a bus or taxi is needed to get one from where hotels or residences are located to the stations and vs. versa. Distances are significant as shown on the website's map (attached are 2 snips of the map and distances listed).
President Claudia Scheinbaum Pardo belongs to the same political party as her predecessor, President Obrador. Both vowed to continue to restore passenger train service in Mexico, including the route from Mexico City via Guadalajara to the border at Nogales. For the viability of such a service, stops need to be made in the cities, in my view. So it would be best if she wishes to achieve her goal to contract with the freight railways (but have a solid agreement to give passenger trains priority in dispatching). Without a doubt, progress will be interesting to watch. The website is lacking a lot of details. Overnight train service as you mentioned makes sense but for such a short route full diner? Maybe they can also use this equipment on other expanded services in MX?
