International Railroad Discussion > South American railroads converting to standard gauge.Date: 11/21/24 15:07 South American railroads converting to standard gauge. Author: usmc1401 With the new chinese part in Peru they need better infrastructure to get freight from the east. This means better roads and railroads. China expects to move a lot of tonnage from Brazil at this port. Does anyomne know if China will build new standard gauge rail lines for this port.

jb Date: 11/21/24 19:03 Re: South American railroads converting to standard gauge. Author: pedrop For sure, the brazilian part of the railroad will be broad gauge (1,600mm) because we have a law here that says that all new railroad in tve country must be built in broad gauge to allow interchange with the existing ones. The exception are the new railroads that are branch of meter gauge railroads or the ones that have no possibility to connect to other railroads, like the ore railroads in Amazon forest.

Pedro that law could be changed for the right prize.

Author: pedrop I do not believe, because if they want to connect the new railroad to our grain system, they will need to use broad gauge. To use a different gauge do not make sense since the focus are the brazilian comodities that are collect in many fields using broad gauge.

Author: masterphots From the Chinese experience here in Chile, I'd guess any serious push back about any aspects of a project and they will be gone. They proposed a new railway between Santiago and the port of San Antonio. High speed passenger as well as a new freight line. Once the government realized what they demanded, especially financially, their bid was rejected. And they won't be asked to bid if the project is ever looked at again. I can't imagine any nation re-gauging their railway system to meet the demands of a foreign actor.
