Self propelled DMU’s
Author: Sparky

Greetings.

I was asked if I knew of any self propelled DMU’s available for sale (not the size of an RDC) and likely in use or in storage (operating condition) in the UK or other EU country or South Africa - possibly in South America also (Brazil, Argentina or Chile) — Able to operate MU and have controls at either end of car. Advantageous is they could be re-trucked for use on narrow gauge with some limited clearance locations.

Please DM message me if you’re able to guide me in a good direction to follow up.

Very much appreciated.

The JR Hokkaido Shinkansen line extension to Sapporo is going to be complete in the next few years which along with pretty consistent line reductions in Hokkaido will leave JR Hokkaido with quite a bit of surplus metre gauge equipment.

Japanese Government/ JR has been donating/selling surplus equipment cheap to Royal Railways in Cambodia.

Might want to research out the appropriate department there.

Sapporo extension scheduled to be completed around 2031, about 4 years behind schedule.

Kiha 183 DMUs are being donated/sold off cheap overseas due to age - these were manufactured in the mid-1980s. I suspect the OP might be looking for single unit dual cab units (Kiha 183 isn't, but Kiha 40 is) which there isn't a surplus yet, because some of them are already being dismantled for parts and in the process of being sold off overseas, too.

When Shinkansen service forces spin off of non-HSR lines, most end up becoming "3rd sector line" but inherit "surplus" equipment to operate the marginally-profitable/subsidized local lines, so you'll be surprised how little the surplus might become. This is especially true in Hokkaido's case, as the current non-HSR route between Hakodate and Sapporo via Chitose (major airport) is separated far from the Shinkansen ROW under construction, and supported by local ridership.

Doesn't hurt.
