visit to Southern Fuegian Railway --Train of the End of the World
Author: WP17

In early February, I happened to be in Ushuaia at the far southern tip of Argentina - getting ready to join a photo-expedition to the 7th continent. But before we departed I made sure to schedule a short visit to and a ride on the Train of the End of the World. The SFR/FCAF is regarded as the furthest south railroad in the world.
This is the remnant of a 2 foot gauge railroad built at the beginning of the 20th century to construct and suppport a prison colony established outside of Ushuaia. It is now a very successful heritage railroad serving the tourist trade.
The railroad is very short -- leas than 5 miles but it takes about 2 hours for a complete round trip. And on some days it can be very busy with 3 to 4 trains leaving around 9am. The railroad uses both steam and diesel power.
Here are several views of the area around the main station

There is a stop about 15 minutes outside the main station where I had planned to get some train shots. However it took a great deal of patience to wait for all the tourists to hop on the steam locomotices to get their instagram photos. But I managed and I did luck out getting a good action shot of the 4th train of the  morning approaching the station.

We rode to the end of the line which is the entrance to the national park. The vast majority of riders disembarked here and went on a park tour. A few passengers remained aboard as the locomotive ran around the train and headed back to the main station.

Photo 6 is a screamer.  The overcast really captures what that area looks like most of the time.

Thanks for this post. I will be down there in November and was unaware of this railway.

I rode this train in the end of January, and also thought it is a great ride.  A crewman told me that the steam engines were converted to burn fuel oil.
The stop in the middle of trip is called Estación Cascada La Macarena, which translates to The Macarena Waterfall Station because there is a waterfall near the station.  I was unable to get a photo of the waterfall, but here are photos of the station sign and close-ups of the builder's plates on one of the engines.

The area is composed of very rugged terrain.  Also, I was surprised to see many wild horses.

Horses are like rabbits, they like to breed, a lot!
