Madgaon Junction Station Goa Train Action 3/26/25
Author: erielackawanna

Mid afternoon on March 26, I checked into the Ginger Hotel directly accross the street from Goa's largest and busiest train station, Madgaon Junction. I had been warned that DSLRs are generally problematic in the larger stations as they attract too much attention from guards, employees, and police. Camera phones, on the other hand, don't garner a second look. So not wanting to waste time or have any pointless conversations, I just used the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I didn't shoot RAW (probably should have - but only found two or three photos where the extra data would have definetely been helpful).

First image is the view from my room.  It was ugly high sun at that point, so I just walked around the neighborhood a bit after checking in, figurring I'd go back to the station when the lighting got better.

Second image is when I did get over to the station, an empty coal train with two WDG4s. Yes, I waited for good light and the first picture I took was completely backlit. Hey, you shoot what is there.

Third image is a Vhandi Baharat Express (train 20645 to Mngalore).

Image four - a loaded coal rake, from Vasco da Gama, with two WDG4s (again, going the wrong way for what was now becoming nice light).

Image five - WAG12b parked in a pocket track.

Image six - a WAP4 positioning cars. This motor would have brought a long distance train in on Monday and will head out with one later this night.

Cool shots!  I've been to India twice and never had an issue with my SLR at any of the stations I visited, and I hung around several for quite awhile shooting trains.  It is a big country and results can differ, but just offering my experience.

I never had a problem shooting at stations there.  But,  a couple of steam sheds threw me out,  even though I had a photo permit.  I later found out that if the shed employed prison labor,  no photos allowed,  period.  I had some interesting discussions with shed masters while being evicted.  Great fun and adventure,  India.
