International Railroad Discussion > Train trip Margao to Karmali, Goa.Date: 05/09/25 07:50 Train trip Margao to Karmali, Goa. Author: erielackawanna Back on March 27, 2025, I had a tourist day that while it was mostly going to be without trains, I used a train to get to my first stop, riding from my hotel in Margao to Karmali, which is the station for Old Goa and Panjim (old and new capitals of Goa). I booked a first class ticket, which was apparently quite an oddity for the 30 minute ride as the train crew wasn't really sure where to even put me. Unfortunately, lighting was as horrific as it could possibly be as my train arrived at Madgaon Junction. And I couldn't get in front of the train at Karmali (not that lighting would have been much better there either). But it was a neat ride and am glad I did it.

Image five - view from my final seat (where they crew eventually decided I should sit with my first class ticket). Image six - 30 minutes later, arrived at Karmali. I did try to walk/run to the front of the train, but it was a brief stop and a long train... I didn't make it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 05/09/25 08:12 Re: Train trip Margao to Karmali, Goa. Author: TCnR Goa was the ' location ' for a major scene in one of the early Jason Bourne movies, a big fad at the time. Had no idea where it was and Google seems a bit undecided as well. Always interesting to see new places and how things are done.

Goa is a state in the Southern part of India, on the west coast. It's probably around the same size is Los Angeles, but getting around is much more complicated. Main cities (all of which are small) are Vasco-da-Gama (port/industrial, I didn't get there, but would have loved to had I had more time, apperently there are still some Alcos there), Margao (gritty/industrial, location of the main train station, I stayed there a couple days), Panjim (capitol, more attorneys and bankers kind of place, no rail service). Goa and Vasco-de-Gama were part of the Portuguese colony that was on India's west coast. Kinda the same arrangement as Macao in China. Date: 05/09/25 10:30 Re: Train trip Margao to Karmali, Goa. Vasco-da-Gama is a city in Goa (named after the Portuguese explorer who first arrived in Goa). There is still strong Portuguese influence in Goa... and lots and lots of colonial homes.
