Railfan Technology > HT1000 question

Ok... So my old reliable HT 1000 that I have used on the railroad (albiet a museum) has "gotten gone" into the underground world of crackheads trying to pawn stuff off for a cheap fix. Needless to say, I'm not happy about this, but I am going to try to make the best of a bad sitaution.

With the narrowband switch coming down the line for even smaller railroads such as mine in 2013, I'm thinking about the replacement radio being narrow band capable. I've got an affinity for how reliable my HT1000 has been, and in a perfect world I would rather just buy another one and call it good. However, are there versions of the HT1000 that ARE compatible with the narrow band requirements for railroad usage?

HT1000 is not narrow band capable, the HT1250 is. XTS3000 and XTS5000 is also.

I have the HT1250 and it is a fantastic radio!

HT1000 and the other radios in the series are not narrow-band capable as others have stated. If you want a good Motorola, get a 128ch HT1250 and your set. Or, the alternative for just a little more money would be the Icom F-3161 NXDN compatible radio with 512ch. Good all around radio although the Class-I's seem to be favoring the Kenwood offering (NX-210) but it will cost you a LOT more. The 3161 can be purchased for around $400 without the NXDN digital board which can be added later if needed for $125-150. Also, the Icom is easier to program and has a lot of customizeable features for scanning and such that the 1250 does not.

There are, although rare, HT1000's that ARE narrowband capable. I've forgotten the part of the model number you have to look for but I think it was a DN or AN model. Check http://batlabs.com/ for the info!

ALL HT1000's will do narrow band, but not all will do 2.5KHz CHANNEL STEPS (NOT DEVIATION) needed for some new splinter channels. The model that you want would to get the newest rev is the 3DN (the last part of the model number). Drop me a PM, I'm sure I can help.

Thanks for that info, Jim. My local Moto shop informed me that none were narrow band capable so I appreciate the corrected info!

Hope we're not confusing the old MT1000/HT600 series with the HT1000; the MT1000 was a great radio and available in 16 channel or 99 channel versions with a very easy to program scan list. Don't believe these are narrow-band-able.

OPR is currently using only Motorola equipment; HT1250 and MTS 2000 portables, and has been acquiring used ASTRO Spectra mobiles and clean cab radios to complete the narrow band conversion which is rapidly approaching.

The old HT1000 is a great radio and they are going cheap on ebay. Just make sure you buy a DN radio,that would be the cheapest way out. If you like the HT1000 style accessories the next best in price is the XTS3000 and its a great radio too. I like the HT1250 for its size and it is a good radio. The HT1250/750 don't get one with a original firmware older than r5.00.00. I carry an XTS5000 FPP most of the time but this is a very expensive toy.
