Modern slide duplicating

Having noticed a lot of duplicate slides on E-Bay, and the fact that they are as good as the originals, unlike the old days, I am curious as to the process these days. I know about scanning in the slides, but how would they get back to projectable slides? Or are we getting there some other way? Curious minds want to know!

Film recorder. Most service bureaus used to have them but they are becoming less and less common these days.
