One constructive commentator mentioned some freak accidents (being run over, falling off the conveyor belt with some elevation and so forth). Sometimes, I get a seat where I can watch the baggage guys do their work. Yup, they do some throwing, which should be no different than what happens at majority of sorting facilities for any shipping company. Best insurance for expensive items on transit is not just to PAY the insurance, but to pack things reasonably well.

Since I can't bring liquids (like alcohol) onboard as personal items, I've checked them in on several occasions. So far, none of the bottles have broken, and I've been able to enjoy a nice drink after travelling.
