Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 users - How to get the blue out?
Author: Englewood

Question for you experts.
I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 10.
What feature(s) would you use to get the natural color back?
Thanks

Not much of an expert but I tried using PSE12 I went to 'Adjust Color', 'Remove Color Cast' then selected the foreground assuming it was a grey base rock, also tried the Roundhouse wall but that didn't really work either. It brought it in within reason but there's still shift in the clouds and the freight cars in the background. Then I hit it with some 'sharpen' and tried to saturate the colors, but the blue is pretty overwhelming. One thing I tripped over is the blue trucks, 'lighten shadows' didn't work at all. Nice puzzle though.

+ tried using the grey reference as the sky and hit it with sharpen and may be close on #2.

++ haven't tried using color curves, maybe that's a path...

I used photoshop and played with the curves a bit and white balance correction.

Best I could get. I'm using PSE-13. You may want to consider upgrading. they have made a lot of improvements since -10!! Started out using "Open in Camera Raw" ---> I made adjustments to the "clarity" (about 35), "white balance" and "tint", "vibrance" and "sharpening" ------> Opened in PSE. made color adjustments to the sky and foreground separetely ----> then back to "open in Camera Raw" again to make some more tweaks to the white balance -----> back to PSE to adjust and desaturate some magenta tint from the locomotive.

I've had Elements 15 for about a year. It is good for basic adjustments, but disappointed with the color properties. I still go back to my old copy of CS2 which has colour sliders, and thus is able to add the complimentary colour to balance out.chris uk.

I'm curious as to what film and processing you used on the 4545. Also, what scanner did you use and software? It looks like there was a serious color shift somewhere along the way. Did the original slide look this bad? So far, it looks like nobody has had any luck in restoring the true blue, and even the sky looks weird. I don't have PhotoShop so I can't help, either.

Englewood,

Is this unit in Black and Red or Blue and Red? I think this may be why folks are having issues doing any colour correction.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.
A whole box of Kodak processed slides ended up like this.
They are from my late friend Ken Lanovich.
I use a HP Scanjet G4050. Most slides come out OK and just
need a little help in photoshop. Something went wrong with the
slides in this box after they were processed. The actual slides in the box
were all like this.

I have shots of the 4545 from 1979 wearing blue. I don't know if or when it ever wore black. But you're right, that one shot looks like it's black.

Sorry for not answering sooner. It looks like our posts were only a minute apart so
I did not see it.

I don't know what color it was. I was thinking blue because it looks freshly painted but I
don't know for sure.

GT ngines were painted a mid-blue. Kodachrome from the mid-90s went through sporadic processing hiccups that shifted color in slides; there are two different Ektachrome processes, one with more steps than the other, and if you got the 'fast' process slides would color shift after several years.

For a picture like this, with an overall shift, the easiest place to start is color-correcting the white lettering and see if that pulls the rest of the image into balance. In the 'expert' mode, at least Elements has an "auto color balance" feature that is worth trying. If it doesn't work, you can always back up and try the more technical fixes.

I have Photoshop Elements 9. I went into "Enhance", "Adjust Color" and "Color Variations". I clicked on the "Reduce Blue" a few times.
