It sounds like a phishing attempt. Only use your sign in in information on the main Facebook page.

Yep, phishing. Just go to the normal, secure FB URL and log in with your current credentials. If they don't work, you were hacked. Contact FB to resolve.

"Phishing" is nasty people sending e-mails that look like they are from legit websites that people have to log in to that are NOT from those websites, and those nasties then get people's log-in info and do bad things with it.

NEVER EVER log into ANY site from an e-mail. NEVER!! Go to the website, and then log in.

If you are going to the actual Facebook URL to log in and it is saying you are locked out, that is because Facebook has locked your account for security reasons. You will have to change your password to reactivate the account. Once you start that process it will send you an email with a code that you will have to provide to reset the password.

This also means you have to make sure your email account has not been comprimised.

Facebook, part of the government's intelligence gathering system.

?!? Government ?!?

It's some bloody capitalists at it again, and like
many capitalists, they are sloppy about the aftermath
of their 'product,' and eventually we'll all clamor
for some environmental controls (aka regulation) on
said facebook and their ilk.

Facebook is going down the route of the dinosaurs, who themselves are a little bit behind me on that road.

I had a problem with someone trying to log into my account. I solved it by turning on 2 factor authentication.

When Facebook sent me a message containing a recent cell phone picture I had taken but not shared with anyone on or off Facebook, asking if I wouldn't like to share it with others ---- I deleted my account. Problem solved.

That pretty much sums it up. It's scary when an organization has your profile info even if you've never used the site before. A similar creepy scenario happened to me around 2011-2012, in their ramp up for their IPO, to attract users.

I didn't have a chance to tell you earlier. When you hover the cursor/pointer over a link within an email, the browser or the e-mail software should tell you the actual URL of the link, if you wait a second or two - you don't have to click on it. That's one way to minimize your chances of being "phished," by looking at the URL to see if it goes to the actual Facebook site, a totally different site, or a fishy-looking site (facebookcomcom.com or an imitation fake site).

But when the e-mail looks authentic, people might not take this extra step because social engineering is all about exploiting your trust. As I've ranted in other topics, people need to be more cynical, especially when dealing with technology.

Hackers time their "phishing" based on potential paranoia caused by the news. When Yahoo! data breach was reported in the media a while ago, hackers got to work, and sent a whole bunch of fake "you need to change your Yahoo! password" e-mails. So mass media is unintentionally (?) complicit in compromising people's security. Facebook's Cambridge Analytics news probably initiated this latest "phishing."

Welcome to the Surveillance State. However, blaming the government only clouds the issue.

The latest Facebook data "scandals" are actually funny in an ironic way, if you really dig deep. When all that personal information benefits The Establishment, nobody bats an eye. But when the data is hijacked and used against The Establishment, suddenly, it's all supposed to be creepy and scary. The trolls got trolled!

Right now might be the best time to sign up on Facebook en masse, in mockery and protest.

Same here!
And I intend to keep it that way.

There is no possible "convenience" that's worth the intrinsic danger to my privacy.

My phone number is being used to call people to tell them there is a problem with their credit card. I am receiving calls from numbers I don't know telling me there are issues with my credit card.

ATT tells me my phone number has probably been stolen in one of those hacks you read about where tens of millions of peoples data has been stolen. Their suggestion is to change my phone number with nu guarantee that will not also be stolen. I asked about setting up a pin to allow any outgoing and ATT said that is not planned. So much for customer security.

Perhaps it is time to get Congress involved.

What guarantee is there that the piece of mail you receive delivered by the US Postal Service has the actual correct return address on it?

No, congress does not need to get involved. It is called education of everyone. Most of us would never fall for a Nigeria scam, but guess what they are still out there, finding people to con.
