Thank You Date: 01/30/25 08:49 Re: Uniden BC75XLT Author: cchan006 Cost of repair is close to the price of a new BC75XLT, depending on who and where you buy it from.
But I'm not going to give you the easy answer, because you have a great opportunity to make yourself smarter, especially since it got very little use - no urgency to replace it right away. It's not difficult to take apart the BC75XLT, which can be done with a normal small Philips head screwdriver. Once done, you can look at the circuit board to see if you can figure out why the display went bad. Quality control issues on consumer electronics usually occur relatively quickly, usually within the "warranty period" which is within a few months, Otherwise, malfunction can result from daily use, like vibration and shock (being dropped). Since BC75XLT uses AA size batteries, common cause of malfunction is to leave dead batteries in the unit for too long, causing acid leak and corroding the circuits. You might be able to see/smell that in the battery bay without taking it apart, but if you DO take it apart, it should be visible on the circuit board, usually with white-ish powder where the corrosion occurred. I repaired a BC72XLT which had loose antenna connection from more than a decade of heavy use. Just resoldered it. I'm still using it today, going on 16+ years.
